San Francisco: Y2K

100 years ago in the era of vast industrialization and the gold rush, people flock from all around the world to a common place where it was rumored that gold nuggets were scattered everywhere and riches are for everyone to grab upon stepping foot on the land. San Francisco was a legend for those who heard about them, and a land of broken dreams for those who believed.

100 years later in the knowledge-based era, the gold rush still exists, only bigger. Millions of dollars are traded on the stock exchange everyday and trillions of dollars are drifting in the virtual world. People, once contented with their lives, followed footsteps of big players like Warren Buffet, George Soros, Donald Trump, Zig Ziglar etc., and ventured into uncharted lands that many couldn’t survive.

MLM, financial advisors roaming the streets, top real estate agents (Still using inefficient junkmail advertising) are clear indications of people still participating in the gold rush of the 21st century. Jobs that promises great fortunes if you dare to strive for it. (I don’t mean to say that they are stupid people, forgive me, but they are habitual line-steppers.)

My point is that (apart from them being irritating) I personally believe the people in these jobs are taking the biggest risk than anybody else especially if their goal is to reach financial stability. In my opinion, the basis of the risk exists because of the promise given to them. Sometimes people just forget to read the fine prints. Some of you might know that working in these jobs, you will most likely to be paid almost nothing in the first few months. Some strive, but they are always stuck. Finally the cream of the crop who’ve done so much to make it there, it is most likely that they could have had more returns, tangible and intangible, with the same amount of effort if they started out as an entrepreneur. But in any case if a entrepreneur were to fail his first business, I believe he would have gained experiences more valuable than any written on a resume, and that is able to help carry him to the next level.

Money aside, the exhilaration of setting up a business from scratch to the satisfaction of seeing your baby grow into a thriving company, that is well respected, that is a preferred employer, and even one that changes the world, is enormous.

Having said all that, financial advisors (p.s. applies only to those whom I’ve met on the streets) are pricks. If they know how to manage their money, keep it to yourself, except for a sincere few. Real estate agents, stop polluting the Earth, and finally, people that’s still frantically climbing up the ladder of MLM and getting your presidential club, ask yourself honestly, are you doing all these because of your selfish wants and greed, or are you sincerely out there to make people’s lives better? Even I have to ask myself that question sometimes. Let all make this world a better place. Start from yourself and just remember no matter what you do, do it with a clear conscience, 问心无愧。

For pot, peace and love.
